Snowflake Embellished Scarf

Today's Dollar Store Craft is an embellished fleece scarf. Don't let that snowflake applique scare you! It's actually not as hard to do as you probably think!

What you need:
~ fleece dollar store scarf
~ white fleece scraps or another dollar store scarf
~ tissue paper (feel free to recycle it -- I did!)
~ printed snowflake motif (mine was 6" wide)
~ thread (I'm using a sparkly silver thread!)
~ pins

STEP ONE: Lay a sheet of tissue paper over your snowflake image and trace around it using a pencil. You will need to trace one for each applique.

STEP TWO: Layer a square of white fleece on top of your scarf with your tissue paper snowflake pattern on top, and pin all layers in place. Avoid pinning directly on any of the pencil lines.

STEP THREE: Sew directly on all the lines. I use a free-motion foot, which makes it MUCH easier, but you can accomplish this with a regular sewing machine foot and lots of turning.

(Look! It's even cute on the back!)

STEP FOUR: Tear away the tissue paper. I like to start on the outsides...

...and then tear away the insides.

STEP FIVE: Using finely pointed scissors, snip away the excess fleece near the stitching lines. I like to tuck my fingers underneath the excess fleece and push the scarf fabric away, to help avoid accidentally snipping the scarf.

All you need to do is repeat for the other side, and that's it!

Bring on the cooler temperatures!!

I love this, although I don't think I have the patience for that detailed a snowflake! LOL! Great idea.

This is a great idea. You could even cut out the blue part that's inside the pattern on the back of the scarf to have a reverse appliqué & the scarf would be reversible too.

Love this! And so much easier than trying to cut out the applique first and then sew it on.

Care, that is adorable! These would make such cute gifts/stocking stuffers.

Oooooh, I'd also be curious to see how the reverse applique technique would look as mentioned above.

Great job as usual :)

This is really cute! I craft items for an animal rescue group to sell for fundraising, and these would be a great addition for winter (and quick to make).

Ooh, I love finding more free motion projects! Thanks for the comments about my quilt! And yes, I'm itching for more, but it will have to wait for another move and a college graduation in May. Then let the quilting frenzy begin!

Do you have an Elf on the Shelf? With your love of things small, (although s/he isn't a minature per se)- my suspicion is that your elf would have a wonderful wardrobe. I saw a skirt yesterday- priced 7.95. I'm sure our elf lothes his/her nudity, but I ain't paying 7.95 for a skirt for my child, much less an elf.

What a great idea! I've done a lot of applique, but never thought of doing it that way before. Thanks for the suggestion.
