This project tickles me!!
I have been sorting, re-sorting, and re-re-sorting my I-Spy squares. I have a few collections in the works, but this one is my current favorite!! I pulled out all the squares with black backgrounds, just for fun, and laid them all out. I love it!!! I sewed them all together last night (when I really should have been working on other projects -- hee hee!), and I just love the look of it! Having the same background really makes it cohesive, without looking too scattered and busy. Again -- I love it!!
All the fabrics are different, with the exception of that cupcake print in the top two rows. Blast! Wish I had seen that before. Oh well, I have a square I can replace one of the cupcakes with.... And does that square with the pixy sticks, second down from the right, not have enough black in it? It's kind of standing out....
Hmmm....
At this point it is a 35"x45" rectangle. It needs to be bigger, obviously, to be a usable quilt. The question is, do I start with a narrow border of a solid color, and then add black borders? Or do I go straight to a black border? Or, do I stop here and wait to collect MORE squares with black backgrounds before I continue?
Maybe I should stop, and work on some of those Christmas projects......... :o)

That's really fun...I just love it!
ReplyDeleteThat is neat -- I've never seen an I Spy like it! What if you did a solid border, then a pieced border of more black I Spy squares, alternating until you have the size you want?
ReplyDeleteHow fun! I love it. I would say do a solid border, a black border, and call it good. I absolutely love the black idea.
ReplyDeleteUuuu, I totally love it! And I actually think it is kinda fun to have one print that is the same ... you could play spot the one that matches! ;-)
ReplyDeleteAnd regarding the borders ... I think I would add something solid or black at some point. Just to kinda pull it all together. But maybe add some more I-Spys first?
That looks great so far, loving the black! I don't have any suggestions as to the border other than maybe wait to see if you can get even more fun black prints to add to it...
ReplyDeleteVery nice! I think a white border and then another border of black i-spy and then another white border with a black binding to frame the whole thing. But really what ever you decide will be fantastic;)
ReplyDeleteI love this! I just heard about I Spy quilts for the first time today at our Stamp Club. I just finished 5 pieced quilts for my kids and their spouses for Christmas. These are the first pieced quilts I had ever made an had so much fun that I can't wait to make I Spy quilts for my grandkids next year!
ReplyDeleteMy 31 year old Singer Athena electronic sewing machine is finally giving up the ghost and I am trying to figure out which kind of machine I should get. I heard that today's Singers just aren't that great. What kind of machine do you have and would you recommend that brand?
Thanks for your fun ideas! I'm glad I found your blog by googling "I Spy Quilts".
Interesting that so many of the blocks have black backgrounds, makes for a very cleaver quilt. I think it should definiately be larger and then maybe go directly to a black border. As one quilt instructor once told me "Let the quilt talk to you, it will tell you what it needs." Have a nice day. BettyLou
ReplyDeleteI had the same thought- but mine was to use your original ISpy D9P quilt pattern and use black for the sashing. I'm not sure what could be used for the setting square. My original ideas was for an all pink ispy quilt.
ReplyDeleteI also think that making a D9P block using food blocks for potholders. I'm only a new ISpy addict, so I don't have the stash to support my ideas.
Hey Care? How about a monthly ISpy swap group (please don't hate me!). It could be interesting- each month could have a theme, and instead of sending 10 different fabrics, maybe we could send 5 each month: all black, all food, girl, boy neutral...etc..etc..etc...
ReplyDeleteI love this. I have not decided how I want to use my Square from the swap I participated in. Every time you make a new quilt though I think I want to make that one. For now I just keep looking and collecting. I think that when you get it to the size you want I would pick a solid border and then use more back i-spies for the outer border. Also if you did a monthly swap I would only want to do like 1 or 2 fabrics per person.
ReplyDeleteI have been following your I SPY group and would love to join. Is that possible?
ReplyDeleteLOVE it
ReplyDeletemaybe a dark border and a couple more rounds of squares?
I'm in total awe of your creativity!!!!
ReplyDeleteI love it! I love all of your creative ideas the i spy stuff!!! I am thinking that I need to host an ispy swap next year so I can build up a better collection!!!
ReplyDeleteif you take out that square that does not have much black in it, then there will be another one jump out and tell you it is now the square with least black ... and before you know it you will have the whole quilt in bits again - LOL
ReplyDelete... adding another row (or 3) of squares should fix it, I think - if there are a couple more squares next to it that have a bit less black than the ones already around it, then it should blend in a bit more and not stand out so much?
and if you decide to not add more squares - a busy (some black and lots of colours) border fabric might do the trick too?
then again ... if you want to unpick and "fix" it (if it annoys you and you think it will keep doing that - then probably better to fix it now that wait and still decide later that it needed fixing and have to unpick even more - lol) I wonder if swapping the pixi sticks square around with the green one below it would work ... I think it just might ... ( it sticks out because of the high contrast between it and everything next to it, so swapping those 2 around would mean a bit less contrast between that square and most of those around it?)
btw - y not just leave those 2 cupcakes squares in there - that way not only can people play "I spy ..." looking for stuff - you can challenge them to find the "mistake"/2 that are the same fabric - lol
I love the idea off the all black background quilt. How's it coming along? I think a black boarded would finish it off nicely.
