So last week I was gabbing away with my sister-in-law as I was helping her quilt a baby quilt she made, when suddenly -- KA-POW! I sewed my thumb!
(If you are squeamish or easily grossed out, you may not want to read on!)
Now, you must realize that I was not going too fast, I was not being reckless, and I really was paying attention to what I was doing. I don't know what happened! I guess it must have been the blabbity-bla-bla-bla that did it.
I've done this once before. In and out through the edge of a finger -- no big deal. The needle didn't break, and it didn't really even bleed much.
This time the needle broke. I looked at my thumb, and the end of the needle was sitting on top of it. Then I looked closer. There was a thread sticking out the hole on the other side of my thumb. Gross.
Lucky for you I didn't think to stop and grab a photo of THAT.
I pulled on the end of the needle and the thread came right out. Super gross.
Yeah. I was sewing with white thread. Ha ha, hope you're not gagging now!(If you are squeamish or easily grossed out, you may not want to read on!)

After I cleaned my thumb up and stopped bleeding, I went back to the sewing machine. The end of the thread coming out of the machine was pink! Super DUPER gross!!
But I managed not to bleed on Susan's quilt. And my thumb is fine.
Moral of the story? No blabbity-bla-bla-bla while you're free-motion quilting!!!
Ouch! I am glad I have never done that, that must have hurt!
ReplyDeleteLovely mental image. :P
God! hope you get well soon, that must hurt a lot!!! Augh =[
ReplyDeleteOMG that is so funny! *Laughing hysterically!!*
ReplyDeleteOh - blech - I am a tad squeemish, but still read on. Just to make sure I didn't do what you did. I don't think I could have pulled it out!
ReplyDeleteI did the exact same thing...TWICE! You think I would have learned after the first time. It really doesn't hurt much when it happens since it is so fast, but afterward it really throbs. I'm glad that your project was safe!
ReplyDeleteOooouch!
ReplyDeleteI often think that the more I sew the higher the probability that one day I will do just what you have done!
I hope its not too sore now!?
"Don't talk & sew"!!
Cheers
Ouch! I did that when I first started to sew back in middle school. Not fun. Hope your poor thumb is OK now.
ReplyDeleteHey, at least you didn't bleed on the quilt lol. I usually scream and then the check the quilt to make sure there is no blood on it.
OOH,EEK, IKE! Pretty gross thread- Glad you're okay.
ReplyDeleteThat had to hurt. I haven't done that yet and crossing my fingers that I don't.
ReplyDeleteI am very sqeamish but for some reason I can't stop giggling. I know sorry. Hope you feel better :)
ReplyDeleteMajor sewing fear #1 for me. I'm super paranoid about this but I've also managed to avoid it. The worst I've had happen is getting my thumb to close and the little gadget that lifts the foot slams down on it and gives me a pretty nasty bruise.
ReplyDeleteI did have this one time that I was inspecting the stitching on a purse of mine and noticed that there was some blood in one of the seams. I looked at the label "Made in China" and had this surreal moment when I realized that some woman in China had bled making the purse I was now carrying.
Ow ow ow OUCH!!! I have never done that, but it sounds kinda painful!!! I am glad you're okay and that the quilt wasn't among the casualties!
ReplyDeletebeen there done that.. only it was my left hand middle finger. Only difference is that I flinched and drew back, thereby ripping....
ReplyDeletewell, you get the picture.
It has been two years and the fingertip is still tender. But you'd never know by looking at it. The nailbed healed perfectly. Thank God for that!
Ouch! I sewed through my finger (straight down through my finger nail!) when I was a young teenager. The needle broke, and we got it all out. Years later (about 10 years) there was a dark spot under my finger nail. I kept digging at it and lo and behold it was a little fleck left from the needle!
ReplyDeleteOh yuck! I actually broke a needle while sewing once. Looked all over the place for it and could not find it. I knew it had gone into my finger but thought nothing of it cuz like hundreds others, I have done that many times before. To make a long story short, 4 days later, I had to have the needle surgically removed from my finger. And I thought it was just infected because of the needle stick.
ReplyDeleteeeew eeew eeewww. awesome story. I can't stop giggling. Why is that?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the good laugh. Oh that's wasn't the purpose of sewing your thumb??? LOL!! Okay well, I caught my finger before and it HURT!! and I felt a little dumb. And I laughed at myself. But I must admit it funnier when you do it - I little grosser too!
ReplyDelete(I sure hope that never happens again.)
