Dusting Off Some Old WIPs......

I've been doing a little spring cleaning around the house. It's nice to get rid of some dust and cobwebs, and wash the windows! Next up it's about time for me to do some spring cleaning in my sewing room -- but not the room itself (which is actually much cleaner NOW than it's been in ages). I'm talking about the closet, and all the many WIPs that have accumulated. I've made a decision -- I must clear out two WIP quilts before I can start a new one.

Problem is, there's a reason they aren't done. I'm stuck! I need help!

(Pardon the wrinkles -- it's been folded up for quite some time!)
I pieced together this little quilt top using circles of only Amy Butler fabrics -- mainly from her Charm line.

I ~love~ each fabric -- they all make me so happy! But now that I've gotten to this point, I'm not sure what to do next. How many borders? What color? A pieced border? Solid? An Amy Butler print? HELP!!

**oops -- forgot to add, I used my circle applique technique for the circles!**

Flower Party Decor -- Dollar Store Style!

I'm so excited about Spring! I went outside with the boys this morning and discovered that my daffodils are blooming! HOORAY!! Signs that warmer weather really is coming!

With that in mind, today I'd like to share what I came up with for my Dollar Store Crafts post this week -- flower-themed party decor!

First, my favorite -- the Happy Birthday banner!

I used pre-cut craft foam flowers and craft foam sheets, both found at my local dollar store.

I lined up 14 flowers in a pleasing color configuration and fed them through my sewing machine, connecting them all. I was pleased that the craft foam sewed up so well! I used a slightly longer stitch to avoid perforating and tearing the flowers, and sewed through the upper portion of each flower so they would all hang upright.

LOVE those bright, springy colors!

I then cut circles for each center, and freehanded letters to spell "Happy Birthday" -- with one blank flower between the two words. I used plain old tacky glue to adhere them together. Done!

I can't tell you how happy this bright banner makes me!

Next up: Pool noodles! I busted out my trusty electric knife and cut my pool noodles in 3/4" slices. Aren't they just delightful? They would be SO pretty just floating in a pool as decor -- or even as packing material, in place of those boring packing peanuts!

Here's what I used them for:

I took a couple pool noodle flowers, some acrylic paint (you can find some like mine at the dollar store if you don't have any on hand -- I didn't!), and a roll of plain wrapping paper, and used the noodle flowers as stamps.

Ta-Da! Fabulous wrapping paper or table covers! (Mine is still wet and wrinkly in the photo.) Stamping like this is a super fun project for kids, too!

I then took a few more of my pool noodle flowers, a kitchen knife, and some straws...

...and made a cute little centerpiece...

...which doubles as straws for thirsty partygoers!
(And check out my leftover-craft-foam-flower coasters!)

Then, last but not least, my pool noodle flower garland. I cut a few slices of a green pool noodle, then cut the "petals" apart to create little green circle "leaves" to go in between the flowers. I tried stringing them two different ways -- one with strong quilting thread, and one with yarn. The yarn version worked much better. I used a regular-length, large-eyed needle, which worked okay because you can squish the noodle flowers over the needle to make it work. Or, to make it a little easier on yourself, you could certainly use a super long tapestry needle.

I love all of it -- especially that banner! I am really looking forward to spring; it was so much fun to work on something bright and fun to get me even more in the mood for warmer weather!

Completed I-Spy Swap Quilt!

Last week Susan at Crafterhours (who participated in I-Spy Swap 2.0) emailed me a photo of her completed (already!! Can you believe it??!) I-Spy quilt. I've been watching and waiting for her to post photos on her blog so I could link to it. You MUST see it!!

Here's a little "sneak peak" photo... Go see more here!

(And would you believe it is her first completed quilt EVER??!?)

Pirates!!

It's Buzz's birthday today -- FIVE! I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!! -- and we are doing Everything Pirate! Yesterday we got out my pile of random fabrics to create some pirate ensembles....

Many pirate-y options!

While JellyBean was sleeping I cranked out some 15-minute pirate pants using some pajama pants to create a pattern. I also made some sashes, a piratey doo-rag, and a flag.

Ta-Da! Pirates!
(I admit -- that doo-rag is my favorite!)

I foresee plenty more piratey goodness to come at OUR house.... But for now -- we're off to have some birthday FUN!

Gifts for Sickies -- L's Quilt

This week I've been working on a quilt for a friend's baby who has been in the hospital. I started Tuesday night, and finished last night. Susan and I laid it out together yesterday afternoon, and tried three or four layouts. They are such busy fabrics; this layout seemed to calm it down a little -- or at the very least give a little order to it!

The pattern is Disappearing Nine Patch. It's such a versatile pattern! There are so many ways to arrange the blocks for very different looks!

For the backing I chose a nice, sunny yellow, and I love the wide pink binding.

I hope it helps to cheer up both baby and mama!

Another ABC I-Spy Book!

When it came time to pay for my fabulous new bag,
Jen suggested that we "do tradesies" instead. FABULOUS idea! She picked an ABC I-Spy book for her adorable daughter Avery!

I modified my original version, adding a velcro tab closure and handle. I'm very happy with how it turned out -- and I love that alphabet fabric for the cover!

Airplane, Butterflies, Clouds, Ducks, Elephant, Fish, Guitars, Hands, Ice cream cone, Jigsaw puzzle, Kites, Ladybugs, Moon, Numbers, Ostrich, Penguins, Quilt, Rabbits, Stars, Tennis rackets/balls, Unicorn, Volleyball, Watermelon, eXit sign, Yarn, Zebras!

I love the handle!!

It was so much fun making this one, I think maaaaaaaybe I could make a few more! :o)

Green Army Men Freezer Paper Template

When I made my green army men freezer paper templates to go along with my Army Bunker Tent last week, I also made the boys some T-shirts. Classic! I love how they turned out!

(Oh yeah -- I found my T-shirts -- where else? -- the dollar store, of course! SCORE!)

If you'd like a copy of my templates, find them here.
