A few years back I found this beautiful hideosity...
I could hardly believe my eyes. I mean, the combination of flowers and ferns and swirls and curls -- not to mention COLORS -- It's just fabulous!
-- and large scale!!!

I put together this quilt top to go with it, figuring the crazy fabric would go on the back. It has very subtle curves and is just as crazy as the backing. Problem is, I got this far and couldn't decide what to do next! I was thinking I should do a skinny white border and a wider blue border, but I think the borders need to have subtle curves as well. And I just can't find a blue that I like with it!
What do you think?
And, who on earth is going to end up with this thing? It's not exactly pretty... but it is baby-sized.
I can't really give it as a baby gift, can I?
Here! Have a super ugly quilt that will likely keep your daughter up all night with its freakishness!
???? :o) ????

Wow, that's a really unique quilt top! Love it! I'd save the quilt for someone with a unique personality. :-D Or use it as an emergency quilt some winter when you're freezing. Or maybe as a picnic blanket....
ReplyDeleteI personally like the top just like it is, without a border.
ReplyDeleteIt's such an eclectic quilt that it will definitely find a home with the right person.
Baby sized quilts are great for all kinds of things; table toppers, for those in wheelchairs, draped over the corner of a chair for decoration, play mat...
I love it!
I've been reading along about your 'ugly' fabrics and have been laughing the whole time. It's funny though... I really really like this fabric. Something about it screams interesting and unique. Not sure I can be much help for your border dilema, but I'm enjoyed your writing!!
ReplyDeleteI agree with the other comments about using it for something other than a baby blanket. It would be a fabulous cover for a senior in a nursing home - border or not. If you did want a border, I would go with the purple or use your 'ugly fabric' as the border!
ReplyDeleteGood luck. Do let us know how you resolve this one.....
OK, I know you think I am crazy but I would LOVE a baby quilt like that!!! I have been enjoying your posts on hideous fabric!! :) I don't know much about quilting since I am just a beginner, but I would use some of the hideous flower fabric on the top as a skinny border then a wider one.
ReplyDeleteI think it's gorgeous and would love it as a baby quilt. Just make sure you give it to someone that is not going with traditional baby colors.
ReplyDeleteI love it and would totally use it for my baby!
ReplyDeletewhy don't you use a skinny white border then the floral fabric as a larger border then use a solid backing with a strip of the floral in it...
If it was my project I would try cutting large squares of the main print fabric, and then sew those strips around them, and maybe avoid the brown sections of the strips.
ReplyDeleteI like it :) its kind of "Punky-Brewster-meets-Whimsey" (I think it needs to be matched to just the right personality). You should make a little doll to go with it, with wacky stockings to match the quilt. can you just see them having a tea party on it! LOVE IT!
ReplyDeleteThis may be weird, but I think it needs no borders. But give it a pop of hot pink for the binding. Maybe even trim it so it's all crazy curvy just like the piecing (not a square quilt).
ReplyDeletesell it... your ugly is someone else's pretty.
ReplyDeleteI have to join in and say NO border needed. I think a bold binding would be perfection!
ReplyDeleteLOL!!!! I have no advise but I just laughed so hard at your final sentence!
ReplyDeletei have a headache from looking at that fabric!
ReplyDeleteI will have a baby, JUST so I can get this as a present! :) It is so fabulous!!!!! I think I might go with a green border is you can't find a good blue. I am so excited to see the final project.
ReplyDeleteI love the print! Not a huge fan of the brown in the quilt top. Butt overall I like it. I would use extra thick batting and call it a play mat. If it were mine I'd makes bag for it and take it with me on playdates.
ReplyDeleteLOL I guess my taste is a bit weird but I love it all. I can't wait to see it finished. :)
ReplyDeleteLooks like a Vera Bradley type print. You know, the print looks hideous as just a 1x1" square but by the time it's sewn into a pretty quilted purse or bag it's become absolutely adorable?
ReplyDeleteI think you should curve all the edges-who wants a square quilt? I like the dark blue edge-but white or purple would make it a little more baby friendly... finish it! Finish it!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love the backing fabric! Not ugly at all! I would leave the front as is......but you probably have already finished this by now.....the backing fabric would make a great bag!
ReplyDeleteNot sure if you've finished your "ugly" quilt yet, but you could do a wide white boarder with some crazy flower applicay on it. Use the colors you'd want to bring out in your quilt like the purples, blues, and greens. I love ugly quilts- they are really fun to put together. good luck!
ReplyDeleteApparently I am crazy too, because I think this is beautiful! Wild, unique, colorful.... I LOVE it!
